Three photographs. One hour. The Matterhorn at Stellisee in the minutes before and after sunrise — from deep blue silence, through the pink glow of the Belt of Venus, to the moment the summit catches the first light of the day.

The story

I was at Stellisee well before 4 a.m. The air was cold enough to see your breath. The lake was completely flat — no wind, no current, just glass. The Matterhorn was already there, waiting.

The blue hour came first. That quiet where everything is just shapes and tones, the mountain a dark silhouette above its own reflection. Then the Belt of Venus — the pink-to-blue band that appears just before the sun breaks the horizon, the shadow of the Earth cast against the sky. The summit sat right in the middle of it.

And then, the first fire. The very tip of the Matterhorn turning orange while everything below it stayed cool. That moment lasts about ninety seconds. Then it's gone.

As a triptych

The three prints are designed to hang together as a triptych — same dimensions, same framing, the Matterhorn centred in each frame. Side by side, they read as a single story: cold, then warm. Blue, then gold.

They also work individually. Each print stands on its own with its own mood. But together they tell you what it felt like to be there that morning, watching the mountain wake up.
